Testbed: New York City’s Water Supply System
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection is implementing a new Operations Support Tool (OST), a cutting-edge, integrated monitoring and modeling system, to enable DEP’s water supply operators to make better risk-based management decisions about how to operate its water supply system.
The system includes 19 reservoirs, several lakes and two major aqueducts. It supplies high quality water for drinking and fire protection to nine million New Yorkers every day.
The OST is designed to use hydrologic ensemble forecasts produced by the U.S. National Weather Service using ensemble 15-day weather forecasts and 9-month climate forecasts of precipitation and temperature.
